Happy Birthday IntercityHotel!
This issue of WIR, Deutsche Hospitality’s employee magazine, designed and produced by Stream, is all about celebrating 30 years of the IntercityHotel brand.
Three decades is a long time, and much at the company has changed. One thing which has never altered, however, is the grounding principle of running hotels situated close to major transport hubs. This idea has brought the IntercityHotel chain both prominence and popularity. Joachim Marusczyk, Managing Director of IntercityHotel GmbH, has been with the brand since the very outset. “IntercityHotel has been a true success story for 30 years. No one at the time would have thought it possible for the brand to develop in the way it has.”
In this case, “at the time” refers back to September 1987, the month in which Deutsche Bahn established IntercityHotel GmbH as an adjunct to its subsidiary company Deutsche Serviergesellschaft (DSG). Steigenberger Hotels AG was already involved at this stage and worked in conjunction with Deutsche Bahn to draw up the main concept. It thus made perfect sense for the former to go on to acquire a 49 percent shareholding in IntercityHotel GmbH two years later.
The company’s expansion plans continued to gain momentum. 2013 saw the launch of the brand’s largest hotel yet, the 412-room Berliner Hauptbahnhof. In 2016, the first IntercityHotels outside Europe opened in Salalah (Oman) and in Quingdao (China). And the brand continues to pursue a course of expansion.
IntercityHotel GmbH marked its anniversary year by signing a cooperation agreement with GBI AG, a major project developer in the hotel sector, while the brand’s new flagship, the IntercityHotel Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof Süd, is scheduled to open in 2019.
